Next – Conference 2017

GENERAL THEME – In contemporary cities we are witnessing the proliferation of different “practices of re-appropriation of space”: from the self-regeneration of empty buildings, to the establishment of autonomous spaces of cultural production, or self-made urban gardens, green areas given new meanings o public spaces re-shaped by their users. Beside this, local collective experiment with the creation of self-made welfare services and spaces for socialization, while squats and squatting projects are defining new forms of cohabitation, housing and the provision of services. These experiments focus on actions that simultaneously redefine modes of social conflict as well as routines and spaces for citizenship participation. We can consider these social practices as laboratories of new political capacities, that challenge the very structure of local democracy.
